As we receive a lot of questioins regarding how to recycle our cans, we decided to gather all your questions and answer them below:

What components come with a spray can?

Our Montana-Cans are made from welded steel or aluminum. We equip them with a plastic nozzle and valve system, mixing balls and of course, a pigment/solvent mixture, the actual paint. They are sealed and filled with a mixture of several gasses like propane, butane and others to serve as propellant.

In the past, CFS or chlorofluorocarbons had been used, which lead to quite a bad reputation for aerosols, as these severely damage our ozone layer. Those days are long gone and all Montana-Cans products are 100% CFS (FCKW) free.

We use cardboard packaging and add a removable plastic ring to serve as a spacer between nozzle and valve system, prohibiting the spray nozzle to activate the can during transport and handling.

Why should I properly recycle Spray Cans?

We’d say simply because it is our duty to do what’s best and protect our environment. Our empty metal containers are fully recyclable and can be put back to use for other products.

However, you should NOT recycle or simply throw away a can that is not completely emptied, as left over content might cause it to leak or explode and harm sanitation workers and the environment during the process.

Most states and countries consider filled cans hazardous waste and make it illegal to dispose them through the regular household waste system.

How can I dispose and recycle Montana-Cans?

Please check your national or local requirements for disposal!

It is always best to use up all the material in the can, ensuring there is no paint nor pressure left. Please also always try to empty it completely by spraying onto scrap materials (cardboard, wood, etc.) until the can runs dry and the container feels a little softer to touch.

Please absolutely refrain from pocking or opening the container to avoid the risk of harming yourself. If a can is completely empty, many countries allow containers to be disposed in your regular recycling or even household waste –

but please always check your local restrictions and guidelines first.

Disposing of a full or half-full spray can is a bit tricky and requires you to leave it with a special hazardous waste collection facility, waste-mobile or other options your local community might offer.

Please ensure to get those full cans you can’t or don’t want to keep for usage in the hands of qualified staff, who will then separate the components and make sure they are disposed of properly and as environmentally friendly as possible.

Why don’t we take them back for good?

We would love to offer a proper recycling program to take back and recycle or even reuse our emptied cans.

As you can imagine though, spray cans are considered “dangerous goods”, there are severe shipping restrictions in place for them. This makes sending them around the world a tricky thing, no matter if new or used.

As a manufacturer with global reach, we try to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible, taking empty cans back would take a double toll on the environment. Hence we consider it best to use local facilities and recycle. Help us out by avoiding shipping emissions and using local facilities in your area to dispose and recycle used cans.

Reusing or even refilling emptied containers is a liability and risk that needs to be avoided at all cost, as used containers can carry even microscopic damages, which can result in serious health issues or harm.
